Cypress, CA, April 12, 2010 –  GENI’s Cluster D projects are using the dynamic  VLAN provisioning tool, Sherpa, developed by National LambdaRail (NLR), over NLR’s Layer 2 switched Ethernet service, FrameNet, to interconnect all participating testbed networks.  As a result, resources managed by Duke University in Durham, NC, the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) in Chapel Hill, NC, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and soon Ohio State University in Columbus are now linked with each other and with the Starlight international exchange facility at Northwestern University in Chicago, effectively functioning as a single network resource for the GENI community.

See the full press release from NLR for more information.

On July 7 2009 the RENCI/Duke project ORCA-BEN demonstrated to the GENI Project Office the successful dynamic establishment of VLANs across NLR backbone and BEN network. The demo consisted of dynamically creating of a number of virtual machine instances at several sites (RENCI, Duke, UNC-CH) linked together by linked VLANs provisioned across NLR and BEN. The demo showcased the ability of the ORCA control framework to create complex isolated  'slices' of substrate and the ability to use pre-provisioned VLANs across nation-wide backbone providers, like NLR, as well as dynamically create VLANs across BEN and seamlessly link these VLANs together.

This demo takes another step towards creating an ORCA-based operational capability for BEN to enable dynamic provisioning of BEN resources by Triangle researchers in support of experimentation.
